3D scanning has become increasingly useful in the medical field in order to create customized medical products for the patients. The use of 3D scanning has emerged in different areas of medicine such as orthopaedic surgery, maxillofacial surgery, making of custom products for the disabled, etc. Conventional 3D scanning with CT, MRI or ultrasound allow measurements of the human body in a non invasive method, yet the cost is considerable and the equipments are large and not easily transportable. This film describes the use of this technology with a hand-held consumer level 3D scanning device coupled with smartphones. This low cost, accessible, quick, portable, easy and non-radiating device could be used to deliver unique and customized patient care in the field of ophthalmology.Film category: community ophthalmology
