Ocular inflammation is often part of more widespread systemic inflammation. These systemic disease entities are rare but may have life-threatening manifestations or public health implications. The challenge is to know when and how to appropriately investigate susceptible individuals without wasting valuable resources on costly tests that do not yield useful information. There are also many challenges in the management of such patients as these systemic therapies are expensive and have potentially harmful side effects. New therapies are also constantly emerging and the optimum management of these patients requires a multi-disciplinary approach. The aim of this symposium is to highlight some of the pitfalls involved in the investigation and management of uveitis patients with concurrent systemic disease, both from an ocular and systemic standpoint.
